Résumé :
|
"How should we celebrate Einstein's centenary?" When that question came from BBC Television and the American PBS network, I was in no doubt about my answer : "Let's make relativity plain." To do it properly, and in a modern way, required the direct consultation of some seventy physicists and astronomers in thirty institutions on both sides of the Atlantic.
Although it accompanies the television film of the same title, this book is separately conceived and written, to convey the ideas and experiments in printed words rather than with moving pictures. I am grateful to the BBC for the double challenge and for the facilities for extensive travels ; also for unwavering support for the project.
The Television special Einstein's Universe, marking the centenary of Albert Einstein's birth, was made by BBC-TV as a coproduction with WGBH (Boston). Peter Ustinov introduced and narrated the programme, which was largely filmed at the McDonald Observatory, in Texas, with the cooperation of its director, Harlan Smith.
